Building the Factory
A World First - A Solar Powered Chocolate Factory

Building the Co-op›
Mott naturally choose a village he had lived in over the years as the site of his little factory. Starting with building a bamboo house, he slowly added additional technologies, such as teaching solar cooker and hand-powered water pump design. The village, Hermitage, is in the heart of the cocoa-growing belt of Grenada.
Mott and two other, one from Oregon and one from the same village, started their Chocolate Company. Transforming an old, abandoned, concrete building into a chocolate “cottage factory.” Because of the hot, humid, tropical climate in Grenada, they required quite a bit of air-conditioning, most of which is powered by our solar panels.
On September 29, 2001 they opened their factory officially and began production. For three months only the three founders and one other friend made all the chocolate and hand-wrapped all the chocolate bars, about 80 kg/week.
